Nigeria’s largest aviation fuel depot inaugurated: a major boost for aviation sector

The consortium of energy companies, including Eternal PLC, Masters Energy, Techno Oil, Quest Oil, Rahamaniyya, Ibafon Oil and First Deep Water Limited, recently inaugurated Nigeria’s largest aviation fuel depot located at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport. The depot, dubbed Joint User Hydrant Installation 2 (JUHI2), covers an area of 46,000 square metres and has a storage capacity of 15,000 litres.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Lagos, JUHI-2 Board Chairperson, Mrs Patience Dappa, highlighted the strategic importance of the asset, which is designed to ensure a constant and reliable supply of fuel to aircraft servicing the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Terminals MMA1, MMA2 and neighbouring airbases.

According to Ms. Dappa, JUHI-2 will bring many benefits to Nigeria, creating direct and indirect employment opportunities and contributing to the reduction of unemployment in the region. She highlighted the operational excellence, safety and reliability of JUHI-2: equipped with state-of-the-art filtration systems, an aircraft fuel distribution system capable of loading four tankers simultaneously, a modern laboratory and state-of-the-art fire prevention measures.

By building JUHI-2, we are not just strengthening infrastructure; we are laying the foundation for the continued growth of aviation in Nigeria. This facility will serve airlines, cargo carriers, private jet operators and other aviation stakeholders, providing world-class fuel service, minimizing downtime and maximizing operational efficiency. In essence, we are not just fueling aircraft; we are fueling the future of aviation in Nigeria.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, highlighted the strategic importance of the facility to Nigeria’s aviation ecosystem. He commended the role played by JUHI-2 in contributing to the country’s overall relevance on the international stage, thereby meeting global aviation infrastructure requirements.

The Managing Director of Eterna Oil Plc, Mr. Abiola Lawal, highlighted the depot’s capacity to load four tankers simultaneously. Furthermore, to ensure the highest standards of fuel quality, JUHI-2 is equipped with an on-site laboratory as well as a modern filtration system. This specially designed system allows each of the four tanker loading points to have a dedicated filter. Furthermore, the depot is equipped with a state-of-the-art fire prevention system, reflecting the company’s commitment to safety, as in our industry, safety is paramount..

In short, the inauguration of JUHI-2 represents a major step forward in the aviation sector in Nigeria. It strengthens the country’s airport infrastructure offering and helps ensure reliable and efficient fuel supply for operators in the sector. By investing in this state-of-the-art aircraft fuel depot, energy companies are contributing to the growth of aviation in Nigeria and paving the way for a bright future for the aviation sector in the country.
