The Nigerian community in the UK is in mourning following the recent death of Mrs Olubunmi Okeniyi, just weeks after she moved to the UK with her two children to join her husband.
Sadly, she passed away on Sunday 13th October 2024, almost a month after they arrived in Sunderland on 16th September.
This tragedy has sparked concern within the Nigerian community about the welfare of people moving to the UK. Many members have expressed their grief at the increasing number of deaths among their compatriots shortly after arriving in the country. Two Nigerians had previously suffered the same fate.
In a message announcing her death, members of the community have appealed for financial assistance through a GoFundMe campaign to help cover burial costs. The message reads: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mrs Olubunmi Okeniyi, who tragically passed away on 13/10/24 at 4:30pm in Sunderland, UK. She leaves behind her husband, Mr Jacob Okeniyi, and we are urgently appealing for donations to support her immediate burial as her husband is unable to cover the costs. Any contribution, however small, will be greatly appreciated at this difficult time.”
According to Godwin Ejeh, a community member, the 49-year-old woman was suffering from breast cancer before moving to the UK. Upon arrival, she began treatment but doctors said her prognosis was life-threatening and recommended palliative care. Due to her circumstances, this care was provided at home by visiting healthcare professionals.
On the day of her death, Mrs Okeniyi asked for help to get to the toilet. After being helped by her husband and children, her condition suddenly deteriorated. The paramedics, who had just left, were called back but arrived too late to save her.
At last count on Wednesday evening, it was reported that £5,800 had been raised, of which £3,557 came from the GoFundMe campaign. This was a demonstration of solidarity from the Nigerian community in the UK in the face of this sad situation.
