Embezzlement scandal at the DRC High Military Court: Major General Mpezo and Colonel Mboma face justice

Fatshimetrie October 17, 2024 – An exceptional hearing took place at the High Military Court of the Democratic Republic of Congo, shedding light on a scandal of embezzlement of public funds involving Major General Mpezo, former commander of the 34th military region, and his financial director, Colonel Mboma. The public prosecutor requested a five-year prison sentence for the accused for their alleged involvement in acts of financial embezzlement.

The facts alleged against the defendants suggest an abuse of power and a lack of probity. According to statements by the FARDC Auditor General, General Mpezo and Colonel Mboma allegedly embezzled considerable sums intended for military operations. Significant amounts in foreign and local currency were allegedly embezzled for personal purposes, thus compromising the financial integrity of the military institution.

Defense lawyers requested additional time to analyze the evidence presented by the public prosecutor. This request was accepted by the High Military Court, which adjourned the case for the defense arguments at a later date.

This case reveals a sad reality where military officials, supposed to be the guardians of the public interest, find themselves involved in illegal practices that jeopardize the people’s trust in military institutions. The misappropriation of public funds is a serious crime that must be fought firmly to ensure transparency and integrity in the management of public resources.

It is essential that justice continues its work diligently and impartially so that those responsible for these reprehensible acts are brought to justice and that public funds are protected against all forms of corruption. The fight against the misappropriation of public funds is an absolute priority to promote responsible governance and ensure the well-being of the Congolese population.
