Devastating Tragedy Strikes Majiya Town, Community Mourns Dead

In Jigawa area, an unprecedented tragedy struck Majiya town, plunging the community into horror and grief. An explosion of a tanker carrying oil left scores dead and injured.

In the early hours of the fateful day, a tanker coming from Kano and heading to Nguru, Yobe State, veered off course near Khadija University, Majiya. The driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to fall and spill its flammable contents. Local residents, attracted by the precious liquid, rushed to retrieve it, unfortunately setting off a series of tragic events.

The ensuing explosion was devastating, killing over 147 people and injuring 72 others, some seriously. Witnesses to the accident described a scene of utter disarray, with flames spreading rapidly, trapping many innocent people in a whirlwind of fire and smoke.

Local police described the incident as a major disaster, noting that the fuel leak and subsequent explosion could have been avoided had residents not attempted to retrieve the flammable liquid. Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi visited the scene of the tragedy to express his condolences to the bereaved families and assure the government of support for the injured.
