Glencore Annual Conference in the Democratic Republic of Congo – Kinshasa 2024: A major event for the mining sector in the DRC

Tuesday, October 8, 2024 will be remembered as the day when Kinshasa hosted the 6th Glencore Annual Conference, a major event bringing together key players in the mining sector in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The meeting was an opportunity for Glencore and its guests to openly discuss critical issues in the sector, highlighting efforts made in the areas of environment, social responsibility and governance (ESG), traceability and sustainability.

Glencore’s presence in the DRC dates back to 2007, with operations focused on copper and cobalt production through its strategic partnerships with local players such as Gécamines and Mutanda Mining. Glencore’s financial contributions to the Congolese government amount to nearly $1 billion in 2023, highlighting the economic importance of the mining sector for the country.

The event brought together high-profile figures including the Minister of Mines, the Swiss Ambassador to the DRC, the President of Gécamines, the CEO of Standard Bank in the DRC and representatives of civil society. Each actively contributed to discussions on the sustainability of the mining sector, stressing the importance of transparency, community engagement and compliance with international standards.

Marie-Chantal Kaninda, President of Glencore in the DRC, highlighted the company’s commitment to sustainable development, highlighting its role in the energy transition and its positive impact on local communities. Mark Davis, CEO of Glencore Copper Africa, welcomed the renewal of KCC’s mining permits as a strong signal of political stability and investor confidence in the country.

Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka also took part in the discussions through a video message, highlighting the importance of responsible mining practices to ensure sustainable development in the DRC. Glencore, certified by the Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI) and active in The Copper Mark assurance program, is on the path to social and environmental responsibility.
