The World Food Forum 2023 opened in Rome under the theme “Healthy diets for all, today and tomorrow,” emphasizing the critical importance of strengthening agri-food systems to ensure global food and nutrition security. At the event, the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Qu Dongyu, called for concrete actions to improve food production, nutrition, the environment and the lives of all, including no one.
Leaders from African countries such as Liberia, Lesotho and Eswatini also took the floor to express the challenges their nations face in the fight against hunger, due to conflict, pandemics and climate change. King Mswati III of Eswatini highlighted the importance of supporting infrastructure such as roads, warehouses and information technology for the development of Africa’s food industry.
Over the three days of the Forum, global experts, young innovators, investors and leaders will discuss the actions needed to build sustainable and inclusive agri-food systems globally. In Africa, more than 340 million people are classified as severely food insecure, according to a FAO report.
