The struggle for peace in Kimbulu: a call for international action

Fatshimetrie, 14 October 2024 – The situation in Kimbulu, in the Baswagha chiefdom in North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has recently been the scene of a clash between two rebel factions. This violent episode has spread terror among the local population and disrupted economic activities in the region.

According to information gathered from local authorities, the fighting broke out when members of the Front des patriotes pour la paix/armée du peuple (FPP/AP) group sought to recover taxes illegally collected by the rival Bana-Bateseka group. These clashes caused human losses and led to the kidnapping of members of the factions involved.

Faced with this escalation of violence, the chief of the Baswagha chiefdom has called for a cessation of hostilities and the establishment of a dialogue to resolve the differences peacefully. It is essential that these armed groups understand the devastating impact of their actions on the local population and on the socio-economic development of the region.

Despite this tragic episode, it is encouraging to note that economic activities have been able to resume in Kimbulu. This demonstrates the resilience and determination of the inhabitants not to be totally impacted by the armed conflicts that regularly shake the North Kivu region.

It is now urgent that the international community intervene to support stabilization and peacebuilding efforts in this region of the DRC. The situation in Kimbulu reflects the complex challenges facing the country, and only a concerted and inclusive approach can put an end to the violence and guarantee a safer future for all the inhabitants of this region.

In conclusion, it is imperative that all stakeholders engage constructively and sincerely in favor of lasting peace in the DRC. Armed conflicts cannot be the answer to the problems encountered, and only a genuine willingness to dialogue and compromise can lead to a peaceful resolution of disputes. The people of Kimbulu and Baswagha Chiefdom deserve to live in a safe and prosperous environment, and it is everyone’s responsibility to work together to achieve this.
