The End of Messianic Politics: Rethinking Nigeria’s Political Future

In a changing political landscape, marked by deep disenchantment, the disappearance of messianic or savior policies seems to be at the heart of the discussions. Once carried by charismatic leaders, these policies based on the idea of a providential savior have gradually lost their power of seduction and conviction.

The example of President Buhari, presented as an upright and incorruptible man when he was elected in 2015, perfectly illustrates this trend. Praised for his supposed redemptive qualities, he has nevertheless failed to advance the country in terms of human development and nation building. His supporters, who saw in him a messiah capable of solving all of Nigeria’s ills, had to face a much darker reality than they had hoped.

Similarly, the political rise of Tinubu, promoted as a competent and intelligent politician, capable of taming corrupt forces to move the country forward, quickly showed its limits. His image as a savior, based on an effective technocratic discourse, has crumbled over time, giving way to a feeling of disillusionment among his supporters.

With the end of messianic politics and the failure of “progressives” to embody real political change, gloom seems to have settled in the country. Citizens, faced with increasing difficulties and a lack of trust in current leaders, are struggling to find reasons to hope for a better future.

In this context, several avenues of reflection are emerging to restore hope to Nigerians. It is essential to restore citizens’ trust in institutions and political actors, by promoting values of integrity and transparency. In addition, the emergence of a leader ready to show courage by committing to defending the general interest, beyond class, ethnic or religious divisions, could bring a significant renewal to the political scene.

Finally, a thorough reform of our political system is required, in order to rethink the foundations of governance and promote a more inclusive and participatory vision. It is time to rethink our political practices, with an emphasis on collaboration, dialogue and cooperation to build a common and prosperous future for all citizens.

In short, the disappearance of messianic or saviour politics offers an opportunity to rethink our way of looking at politics and to reimagine a more just and equitable system, capable of meeting the expectations and aspirations of the population. It is by resolutely committing to a future based on values of integrity, solidarity and justice that Nigeria will truly be able to reconnect with hope and confidence in a better future.
