Social reintegration of incarcerated women: a crucial call for funds in the DRC

Fatshimetrie, October 14, 2024. A crucial call for funds was launched today, highlighting a pressing need to support the social reintegration and training of women and girls incarcerated in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This initiative, led by Action pour le Développement Durable (APLDD), aims to offer these women a new start, by allowing them to benefit from adapted training and support for their reintegration into society.

Neneth Masangi, Managing Director of APLDD, stressed the importance of this approach, which is part of the project “Recovery of the economic fabric of women and girls in makeshift restaurants, commonly known as ‘Malewa'”. This project, supported by the National Agency for the Development of Entrepreneurship and Creation (ANADEC), aims to encourage female leadership, promote women’s empowerment and foster social equality. It is also about promoting the creation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in order to enable these women to become actors of development in the DRC.

A flagship event, the “Gourmet Congolais” charity gala evening, is planned for December 6. This charity evening will aim to raise awareness among different sectors of society and raise additional funds to support the women and girls supported by the project. Business creation kits, cooking training materials, as well as awareness campaigns against gender-based violence will be financed through this event.

The pilot project, launched in November 2023 in the commune of Barumbu, has already trained around 70 women from makeshift restaurants on various subjects such as food hygiene, financial management and culinary arts. Spanning a period of two years, this project represents a significant commitment to the empowerment of women in the DRC.

In conclusion, this call for funds is of paramount importance for the future of women and girls incarcerated in the DRC. By investing in their training and social reintegration, society is helping to build a more inclusive and equitable future for all.
