As Nigeria’s energy landscape continues to experience hiccups, electricity consumers in Fatshimetrie Metropolitan Area have expressed dissatisfaction over the incessant collapses of the national power grid. The recurring phenomenon, which has plunged the country into darkness on many occasions, has become a source of embarrassment to many citizens.
Recent data reported by NAN News Agency reveals that last Monday marked the sixth grid collapse in 2024, plunging many areas into darkness. Although efforts were made to restore power supply to parts of the country the following day, many residents of Kubwa, Lugbe, Kuje and environs remain skeptical of a long-term resolution to the recurring problem.
Indeed, Mrs. Eniola Oluseyi, a resident of Kubwa, described the frequent grid collapses as a real embarrassment, urging the Federal Government to find lasting solutions to address them. According to her, every breakdown or blackout is a source of shame to consumers and it is imperative that the government takes decisive measures to avoid future incidents.
On his part, Mr. Chibuzor Okoye, a resident of Lugbe, stressed that these recurring incidents of breakdowns or blackouts are detrimental to the image of the country. He believes that the government must put in place appropriate measures to prevent such occurrences in the future as this situation seriously affects the development of the nation.
As for Mrs. Priscilla Akpan, also a resident of Lugbe, she highlighted the negative impact of these frequent breakdowns of the network on the daily lives of Nigerians. She insisted that the situation is not acceptable in a country where huge sums of money are invested in the energy sector, without the necessary improvements being noticeable.
Meanwhile, Mr. Usman Aliyu, a resident of Kuje, stressed that given the massive investments made in the energy sector in Nigeria, grid collapses should no longer be tolerated. He believes that authorities in charge of maintaining the grid must identify the underlying causes of these recurring incidents in order to effectively address them.
In a statement posted on its Twitter account, the Fatshimetrie Electricity Distribution Company confirmed that the grid experienced an interruption on Monday at 6:58 p.m., without giving further details on the reasons for the collapse. However, it assured that it is working closely with all stakeholders to restore power supply as soon as the grid is stabilized.
In conclusion, it is imperative that concrete and sustainable measures are taken to address the problem of incessant grid collapses in Nigeria. The stability of the country, the quality of life of its citizens and its image on the international scene are at stake. The relevant authorities must act quickly and effectively to ensure reliable and uninterrupted power supply for all Nigerians.
