The humanitarian crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo remains an alarming scourge that requires an urgent and concerted international response. The calls made during the 75th session of the Executive Committee of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Geneva highlight the urgent need to invest in order to address the endogenous and exogenous causes of this crisis, particularly in the east of the country.
Jacquemain Shabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Interior and Security, stressed the crucial importance of the involvement of the international community alongside the Congolese government to address this situation. The multiple challenges facing refugees and internally displaced persons, such as the proliferation of armed groups supported by foreign powers and violations of the fundamental rights of vulnerable populations, must be addressed as a priority.
It is crucial to recognize that behind every statistical figure lies a poignant human reality. Every woman who is a victim of violence, every child deprived of education, every person forcibly displaced represents an urgent call for collective and united action. The responsibility lies with the international community to support the DRC’s efforts to ensure the voluntary return of refugees in conditions of safety and dignity.
Dialogue with neighboring countries, such as Rwanda, and initiatives to facilitate the return of refugees and internally displaced persons are crucial steps in this process. The establishment of sustainable reintegration mechanisms and support for host communities is essential to ensure a harmonious and sustainable transition.
Furthermore, the issue of statelessness and mass population displacement remains a major challenge. The progress made in the fight against statelessness and the commitments made at the last Global Refugee Forum must be translated into concrete and coordinated actions.
It is imperative that the international community step up its efforts to provide a comprehensive and effective response to the humanitarian crisis in the DRC. By supporting the initiatives of the Congolese government and mobilizing adequate resources, it is possible to put an end to the suffering of the affected populations and build a more promising future for all.
