The city of Beni, located in the province of North Kivu, is preparing to commemorate a sad anniversary: the atrocities perpetrated by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) ten years ago against innocent civilians. This sad event will mark the minds and hearts of the inhabitants of Beni, who are preparing to honor the memory of the victims during an ecumenical service planned at the Ngadi stadium, in the commune of Ruwenzori. This commemoration is intended to be a moment of contemplation, solidarity and collective memory.
The mayor of Beni, Nyofondo Jacob, confirmed the holding of this ceremony by promising to put in place all necessary measures to guarantee the safety of the participants. He aims to offer a serene environment conducive to reflection and remembrance. Under the evocative theme “Memorial in the lives of men”, this day aims to pay tribute to the lives lost and to remind everyone of the importance of remembering.
The population of Beni is warmly invited to gather and actively participate in this commemorative event. A caravan will leave the town hall towards the Nyamwisi roundabout before going to Ngadi for the ceremony. The involvement of the various civil society actors, such as Me Pépin Kavotha, underlines the importance of this day in the life of the community.
In addition, the Congolese Teachers’ Union (SYECO) in Beni has decided to observe a day of mourning in memory of the teachers and students who fell under the attacks of the ADF. This decision highlights the devastating impact of violence on the education sector and recalls the need to support these committed professionals.
At the same time, in Butembo, a peaceful march is organized by the coordination of citizen movements and pressure groups to express support for the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) in their fight against aggression, in particular that of the M23 supported by Rwanda. This initiative demonstrates the will of the population to unite for peace and justice in a region continually tested by conflicts.
These commemoration and mobilization events demonstrate the resilience and solidarity of communities in the face of adversity. Despite the hardships, the population of Beni remains standing, determined to build a better future for future generations. This day of remembrance is part of a process of unity, mutual support and hope for a peaceful and prosperous future.
