Fatshimetrie, October 13, 2024. The hunt for the bodies missing following the shipwreck on Lake Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo continues, with unwavering determination on the part of the government. The Minister of Social Affairs, Nathalie-Aziza Munana, stressed during her mission to Goma in North Kivu that efforts are continuing to find the victims still missing.
Search operations are now being conducted using laser-equipped drones from the FARDC naval force, in the hope of locating the missing bodies. The Minister stressed the importance of this approach to provide closure to the bereaved families and ensure that such tragedies do not happen again, as shipwrecks remain a recurring reality across the country.
Following a meeting led by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, strict measures have been taken to ensure the accountability of those involved in the accident. Two officials, Mr. Amani of the Transcom MINOVA company and Mr. Safari Kubiri of the DGM, were arrested by the Goma General Prosecutor’s Office, thus demonstrating the government’s determination to shed light on this tragic event.
The Minister’s visit to Goma provided an opportunity to witness the impact of the disaster up close, by meeting survivors interned at Kyeshero Hospital and by talking with the victims’ families. This humane and empathetic approach is part of a multi-sectoral socio-humanitarian approach that was discussed with local authorities and stakeholders.
In a gesture of national solidarity, the government authorized families to organize the funerals of their deceased loved ones, covering medical expenses and offering material support for the ceremonies. The burial of the victims has been ordered and legal proceedings are underway against those responsible for the shipwreck, so that justice can be done for the victims and their families.
In conclusion, this tragedy on Lake Kivu is a reminder of the importance of maritime security and the responsibility of the actors involved. The Congolese government is showing its determination to address such crises and support the affected communities, thus providing an example of solidarity and government action in times of crisis.
