President Félix Tshisekedi recently gave instructions to Prime Minister Judith Suminwa to assess the implementation of measures to ease the state of siege. This decision comes as the National Assembly authorized a new extension of the state of siege in the provinces of Ituri and North Kivu, despite doubts expressed by local deputies about its effectiveness.

The Head of State stressed the need to support the schooling of children in these regions, while promoting an environment conducive to economic development and entrepreneurship. The tax easing measures put in place aim to support businesses operating in the provinces under a state of siege, with the aim of stimulating economic activity and promoting job creation.

However, local elected officials question the effectiveness of the state of siege and believe that it is no longer necessary. They suggest that the management of these provinces be entrusted to civilians, allowing the military to focus exclusively on law enforcement operations. This proposal raises questions about the relevance of extending the state of siege and highlights the challenges the government faces in the region.

It is essential to strike a balance between the security of citizens and respect for fundamental rights, while promoting the economic and social development of the provinces concerned. Collaboration between local authorities, security forces and civil society is crucial to find sustainable solutions to the security and socio-economic challenges facing these regions.

Ultimately, it is imperative that the decisions taken by the government aim to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants of Ituri and North Kivu provinces, while ensuring long-term stability and security. Evaluating the implementation of the measures to ease the state of siege is a crucial step in finding effective solutions to address the complex challenges facing the region.
