A New Constitution for a Restored Congo: Reconnecting with National Identity

In a context where the question of the Constitution in the Democratic Republic of Congo is arousing heated debates, Professor Placide Mabaka’s latest work brings a new perspective rich in lessons. Entitled “A new Constitution for a restored Congo”, this book raises crucial points on the need for the country to equip itself with a fundamental text written by the Congolese and for the Congolese, on Congolese soil. A call to reconnect with the very essence of national sovereignty and democratic legitimacy.

At the heart of this reflection is the desire to define the contours of a restored Congo, capable of reinventing itself through a modern Constitution adapted to the challenges of the 21st century. The author highlights the importance of fundamental questions such as the name of the country, the form of the State, the national anthem, all symbolic elements that contribute to forging national identity and cohesion.

The past experience of the dismemberment of Congolese provinces is also critically addressed, highlighting the harmful consequences of such a policy on the social and territorial cohesion of the country. Placide Mabaka thus invites us to rethink the issue of decentralization by ensuring that it is compatible with the specificities and aspirations of the different Congolese communities.

In an exclusive interview with Droits et Citoyenneté magazine, Professor Mabaka sets out the key ideas of his proposal for a new Constitution. Through a sharp and well-founded analysis, he defends the need for an inclusive and transparent process, guaranteeing the participation of all citizens in the development of this fundamental text.

Ultimately, “A New Constitution for a Restored Congo” presents itself as a major contribution to the constitutional debate in the DRC. By advocating a participatory and concerted approach, Placide Mabaka’s work opens the way to a deep reflection on the foundations of the rule of law and democracy in Congo, thus propelling the country towards a future marked by responsibility and active citizenship.
