Strengthening Energy Cooperation in West Africa: Validation of the Host States Agreement for the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline

Fatshimetrie, October 11, 2024 (ACP/MAP) – The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is organizing, in Lagos, Nigeria, a regional workshop focused on the review and validation of the Host Government Agreement (HGA) within the framework of the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline project. This project, which came into being thanks to the leadership of King Mohammed VI, former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari and the current support of President Bola Tinubu.

This strategic workshop follows multiple negotiation sessions on the provisions of the Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) and the Host Government Agreement (HGA), held in key cities such as Rabat, Marrakech and Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire.

In collaboration with the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM) and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), responsible for the development of the project, this workshop brings together representatives of the States concerned, sectoral ministries and national oil companies of the 13 countries crossed.

This initiative marks a crucial step in the process of implementing the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline, a major project that aims to strengthen energy cooperation between countries in the West African region. The participation of experts and stakeholders demonstrates the collective commitment to this major undertaking, which aims to promote the socio-economic and energy development of the region.

By bringing together key players and encouraging dialogue between stakeholders, this regional workshop demonstrates the common desire to promote regional cooperation and integration in the energy sector. It constitutes an essential exchange platform for the advancement of the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline project and for strengthening ties between partner countries.
