Displaced Bikers of Goma: Determination and Adaptability in the Transport Sector

Fatshimetrie, October 11, 2024 – The integration of young displaced motorcycle taxi drivers from Rutshuru and Masisi into the transport sector in Goma is a testament to their remarkable adaptability. Meeting some of them, it is clear that these young motorcyclists demonstrate unwavering determination to ensure their livelihood and that of their families, despite the challenges they face.

Mr. Asifiwe Asimwa, one of the displaced motorcyclists, shares his experience by emphasizing that the highway code remains the same, but they must compete to attract customers and ensure their livelihood. He mentions the risks of accidents and police and military harassment that embody the major obstacles to their activity. Despite these difficulties, they strive to adapt to survive in an environment that is often hostile to them.

Another driver, Mr. Benoît Renge, originally from Kitshanga, also expressed his concerns about customers who sometimes refuse to pay for their services, which represents a source of frustration and additional difficulties in their precarious daily lives.

The massive arrival of these young displaced motorcyclists has not only contributed to the increase in the number of motorcycle taxis in Goma and Nyiragongo territory, but has also created some road congestion. However, this presence ensures permanent mobility for customers, demonstrating the essential role they play in the local economy despite the challenges encountered.

In a context where war and instability persist in some regions of the DRC, it is crucial to recognize the courage and resilience of these young motorcyclists who struggle to provide for their families in difficult circumstances. Their story highlights the importance of solidarity and mutual aid to face daily challenges and build a better future despite the obstacles encountered. The young motorcycle taxi drivers of Goma are a living example of determination and perseverance in the face of adversity.
