The Niger Delta Chamber of Commerce: A new economic engine for the Akwa Ibom region

The recent sensitization event on the establishment of the Niger Delta Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Trade, Mines and Agriculture (NDCCITMA) in Akwa Ibom State, chaired by Governor Umo Eno, provided an opportunity to highlight the diverse economic opportunities and invaluable resources available in the region.

At the event, the governor highlighted the diversity of the Niger Delta’s wealth, presenting it as much more than a mono-economic region focused solely on oil. He highlighted the region’s enormous potential in terms of human and mineral resources, highlighting the significant production of oil palm and other food crops.

The NDCCITMA initiative emerged as a critical necessity for the rapid transformation of the region, providing a means of support to local entrepreneurs who may struggle to meet the stringent requirements of traditional financial institutions.

The Managing Director of NDDC, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, highlighted the importance of this initiative in bridging the gap between NDDC and local entrepreneurs, thereby working to positively influence the development of key sectors such as transport, manufacturing, trade, mining and food security.

The NDCCITMA Chamber of Commerce has presented itself as a privileged space where entrepreneurs can benefit from relevant advice to develop their businesses and build their capacities. It is committed to supporting trade at all levels, from small businesses to large organizations, while focusing on solving the region’s food challenges, skills development and capacity building.

By bringing together local chambers of commerce, economic stakeholders and professional associations, NDCCITMA aims to work closely with NDDC to accelerate the economic and social development of the region. This initiative is proving to be a real lever for the growth and prosperity of the people of the Niger Delta.

In conclusion, the establishment of NDCCITMA represents a crucial step in the economic transformation of the Niger Delta, offering promising prospects for the growth of local businesses, job creation and the strengthening of the economic fabric of the region.
