Police investigation underway following election unrest in Rivers State, Nigeria

In the wake of the turbulent local government elections that quickly turned into a devastating spate of violence in several parts of Rivers State, Nigeria, the state police force has launched a comprehensive investigation to understand and resolve the unrest that erupted.

The newly appointed Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mustapha Mohammed, made this announcement during a field assessment of the affected areas. He told newsmen that immediate measures were underway to restore order and ensure the safety of the people of the state.

“We are conducting patrols to enhance public confidence in their safety,” CP Mohammed said. “As part of our proactive measures, we are assessing the situation and have launched a thorough investigation. A team of experts, led by the Deputy Commissioner of the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and assisted by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, has been tasked to conduct a thorough investigation of the situation.”

He stressed that experienced police officers will be assigned to the case and a detailed report will be submitted to the Inspector General of Police at the end of the investigation.

In an appeal for peace, CP Mohammed urged cooperation from all stakeholders, saying: “I am a peacemaker, and my message to all is to cooperate to maintain order and security. The state is not in a state of volatility, and we will continue to ensure public safety. We are working in collaboration with state and non-state actors to secure the entire state.”

The Commissioner visited several affected local areas including Port Harcourt City (Phalga), Obio/Akpor, Emuoha, Ikwerre and Eleme as part of his field assessment.

The impact of these violent events underscores the importance of open and constructive dialogue between the various parties involved in order to find lasting and peaceful solutions for the future of Rivers State.
