As part of its commitment to improving taxpayer experience and facilitating tax transactions, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) recently launched a USSD code *829# aimed at simplifying tax payment processes. The initiative, launched during the Customer Service Week, reflects the agency’s continued efforts to provide efficient and responsive services to taxpayers.
The launch of the USSD code places Nigeria among the six African countries to deploy the technology to simplify tax payments. Taxpayers on all mobile telecommunications networks in the country will now be able to contact the FIRS in real time for queries related to obtaining Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN), verification of Tax Clearance Certificate (TCC), information on tax types and rates, location of the nearest FIRS office, as well as general tax-related queries.
The Chairman of FIRS, Zacch Adedeji, underscored the agency’s commitment to simplifying tax administration and ensuring that every taxpayer, whether in a busy city or in remote areas, can interact with the FIRS seamlessly. He encouraged taxpayers to take advantage of the benefits offered by the USSD code and use it for all their queries, stressing that the service provides access to various tax information in a simple and straightforward manner, without the need for an internet connection.
In addition to the USSD code, the FIRS has also launched a Customer Centricity Guide which outlines the policies, processes and procedures aimed at placing taxpayers at the heart of the services offered by the agency. The guide is a testament to the FIRS’ commitment to treating taxpayers with respect, professionalism and efficiency, thereby reinforcing a culture of service excellence and fostering trust and voluntary participation by taxpayers.
The National Coordinator of Servicom, Nnenna Akajemeli, commended the efforts of FIRS in ensuring taxpayer satisfaction, stressing the importance of initiatives such as the USSD code and the Customer Centricity Guide in simplifying tax processes and delivering quality service to citizens.
In conclusion, the launch of the USSD code *829# by FIRS marks a significant step forward in simplifying tax processes in Nigeria, reinforcing the agency’s commitment to delivering efficient and taxpayer-friendly services. This tool, combined with the Customer Centricity Guide, places taxpayers at the heart of FIRS’ approach, creating a more transparent, efficient and customer-centric tax experience.
