Democratic Republic of Congo elected to UN Human Rights Council: Historic step towards justice and peace

At the heart of the United Nations General Assembly held in New York in October 2024, the Democratic Republic of Congo has won the respect and trust of the international community. Indeed, with an exceptional majority of 172 votes out of 190 voters, the country was awarded a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2025-2027 term. This historic event marks an important step in the diplomatic and political journey of the DRC, reflecting its will and commitment to human rights.

This is both a recognition and a responsibility for the Democratic Republic of Congo, which had applied for membership in the Human Rights Council and the UN Security Council last August. Under the leadership of President Félix Tshisekedi, the country has been able to mobilize the necessary support, demonstrating its determination to play an active and constructive role on the international scene.

This election, welcomed by many voices around the world, reaffirms the importance given to human rights in international diplomacy. It also demonstrates the confidence of other United Nations Member States in the DRC’s ability to promote and protect the fundamental rights of all.

It should be noted that the candidacy of the Democratic Republic of Congo was supported by the African Union during its 4th ordinary session of the Executive Council, thus demonstrating the solidarity and unity of the African continent around human rights issues.

This election therefore crowns the efforts and progress made by the DRC in the field of human rights, but it also constitutes a stimulus to further strengthen its commitment to the promotion and protection of these essential rights. It is a message of hope and confidence in the future, one more step towards building a fairer world that is more respectful of the rights and freedoms of everyone.

In short, the entry of the Democratic Republic of the Congo into the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2025-2027 term is a victory for human dignity, justice and peace. It is a historic moment that invites reflection and action, with the aim of building together a better world for all.
