In 2024, THE World University Rankings, one of the most influential assessments of university performance, evaluated 1,907 higher education institutions from 108 different countries and regions. The rankings are based on 18 key performance indicators, assessing institutions on the quality of teaching, research environment, research impact, industry collaboration and international outlook. In this context, Covenant University distinguished itself in these different categories, thus rising to the top of Nigerian institutions.

The ranking places Covenant University in the top 800-1000 universities globally, alongside the University of Ibadan (UI), which occupies the second position among Nigerian universities.
Complementing the list are the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Bayero University, Kano, among the top five universities in Nigeria.
In addition, the University of Oxford maintains its position as the world leader, ranking first for the ninth consecutive year, setting a record in the history of THE rankings. Stanford University comes in second, pushing Harvard University to fourth, while the University of Cambridge drops to fifth.
The analysis of the 2024 rankings was based on over 134 million citations from 16.5 million research publications, as well as survey responses from over 68,000 academics worldwide, highlighting the rigorous methodology adopted.
