Building safe schools in Nyiragongo: the imperative of meeting safety standards

Fatshimetrie, an urgent recommendation for the construction of schools in Nyiragongo

The construction of school buildings is essential in the territory of Nyiragongo, North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This was stressed by Mr. Thierry Gasisiro, executive secretary of the civil society in this entity, during an interview with ACP. He called on entrepreneurs working in the field of education to build their schools in compliance with the required standards to avoid tragic incidents such as the collapse of buildings, a problem already well known in Nyiragongo.

The recent incident in the village of Ngangi 1, where part of a school structure was washed away by torrential rain, highlighted the crucial importance of respecting construction standards. This incident caused injuries to three students and underlines the risk posed by buildings that do not comply with the standards in force.

Thierry Gasisiro stresses the need for all school and educational establishment leaders to ensure the quality of construction, in order to avoid similar incidents in the future. He also calls on local and national authorities to take concrete measures to ensure the safety of students and educational staff.

This incident is unfortunately not isolated in the Nyiragongo region, or even in the North Kivu province. Similar cases have already been reported, causing human and material damage. It is imperative to act quickly to ensure that such tragedies do not happen again in the future.

In conclusion, the recommendation to build schools that comply with international safety standards is an absolute priority. It is essential that all stakeholders involved in the education sector become aware of the importance of the quality of construction to ensure a safe learning environment that is conducive to the development of students.

Fatshimetrie therefore strongly encourages all stakeholders to fully engage in this path, in order to prevent potential tragedies and guarantee a better future for the youth of Nyiragongo.
