The controversy over the University of Ilesa: Between Truth and Lies

The University of Ilesa in Osun State is at the centre of a controversy between former governor, Adegboyega Oyetola and his successor, Ademola Adeleke. The controversy arose during their condolence visits to Owa Obokun Palace following the death of Oba Adekunle Aromolaran.

Ademola Adeleke claimed during his visit that he had brought the University of Ilesa to life by ensuring that funds were released for its launch. However, during his visit, Adegboyega Oyetola, represented by the CEO of the National Inland Waterways Authority, Bola Oyebamiji, dismissed the claim as a lie, saying that his administration not only established the university but also obtained approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) before constituting a governing council for it.

Oyetola stressed that his administration had engaged competent people to establish the university and that the establishment of its governing council had been approved by the NUC. He said he had verifiable documents to prove the facts and called on those who challenged his version to come forward with tangible evidence.

This controversy between the two former governors highlights the challenges of higher education development in the region. It is essential to clarify the facts and provide tangible evidence to untangle truth from propaganda. Transparency and honesty must prevail in the pronouncements of policy makers to ensure balanced and fair development of higher education in the region.

This dispute over the paternity of the University of Ilesa underscores the importance of educational governance and accountability of policy makers in promoting quality education. It is imperative that the authorities ensure the sustainability and smooth functioning of higher education institutions to provide premier learning opportunities to students in the region.
