Gen Z, a cohort known for its quirkiness, outspokenness, diversity, authenticity, and love of 90s-inspired fashion, often referred to as Y2K style, is getting all the attention. But how did it get its name, and what does it really mean?
“Zoomers,” as they are known, are the children of Generation X (born between 1965 and 1980). The “Z” in their name is said to stand for “Zoomers,” a nod to the fact that they are the first generation to grow up with widespread access to the internet and smartphones. These young people are thus called “Zoomers” because of the zooming motion they often make with their fingers on touchscreens. Additionally, they are referred to as digital natives, the internet generation, and centennials because they grew up immersed in social media and technology.
The internet has profoundly shaped their communication style and views on social issues, with many Gen Zers becoming content creators and influencers. They are a connected, creative, and engaged generation, critical of the world around them and seeking to express themselves in an ever-changing digital environment.
So who coined the term “Generation Z”? The label was first used by researchers and demographers to refer to the generation that followed Millennials, or Millennials. The term, which began with Generation X, continued with Generations Y and Z. While no single individual is credited with coining “Generation Z,” the term gained popularity in the late 1990s and early 2000s as academics began to study this generation that was born into a rapidly changing digital world.
Thus, Generation Z embodies a new era of digital natives, digitally savvy individuals who are fighting for equality, inclusivity and social change, while having a strong influence on contemporary culture and society. They are redefining societal norms and expectations, and continue to shape the digital and social landscape through their creativity and boldness.
In their quest for meaning and impact, Zoomers are emerging as a driving force for change, bringing freshness, authenticity and vision to an ever-changing world.
