The recent statements of Dr. Yemi Farounmbi, Nigeria’s former envoy to the Philippines, highlight a key point: the country’s youth alone cannot solve the challenges facing the country. While President Bola Tinubu recently announced a 30-day youth conference to discuss the country’s problems, Dr. Farounmbi points out that the initiative risks missing the mark by failing to address the root causes of the country’s problems.

The President’s speech, while announcing that he would listen to the voices of the people, appears to be a repeat of past policies and actions that have led Nigeria to its current predicament. According to Dr. Farounmbi, a new National Conference is needed to allow key stakeholders to discuss the direction the country should take. He says the real issue lies in the need for deep reform of federalism, restructuring and building strong institutions – all of which are essential to solving the country’s economic challenges.

Beyond simply giving voice to the youth, it is crucial to address the structural, political, social and moral issues affecting Nigeria. Dr. Farounmbi emphasizes the importance of encouraging the creativity of Nigerians and ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to develop their talents. By emphasizing the need to address growing poverty, hunger and separatist tendencies, such as those of the independence-seeking movements such as the Yoruba Nation, IPOB and the Ijaw Nation, he highlights the urgency of a thorough collective reflection.

Thus, beyond a mere consultation of the youth, Nigeria must engage in an inclusive national dialogue to address the major challenges it faces. Only a frank and honest exchange will lay the foundations for a prosperous and harmonious future for all communities in the country.
