The Independence Day speech by President Bola Tinubu has sparked reactions within the pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere. Indeed, the National Communication Secretary of the organization, Mr. Jare Ajayi, noted that the President’s speech bore similarities with his campaign manifesto called the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Afenifere’s analysis highlighted that the President addressed several of the current challenges facing Nigeria, while conveying a more forward-looking vision. The organization welcomed the President’s acknowledgement of the economic challenges faced by Nigerians, such as the rising cost of living and rising unemployment. However, Afenifere members stressed that this acknowledgement should be followed by specific measures to address these challenges, with concrete results demonstrating an improvement in the difficult living conditions outlined by the President.
Afenifere expressed hope that the ongoing reforms of the government would soon yield favourable results for the people. The National Secretary for Communication particularly appreciated the President’s commitment to promoting mechanized agriculture, aimed at increasing food production and reducing food costs. He also commended the organization of a youth conference to encourage youths to get involved in nation building as a positive initiative.
While acknowledging with President Tinubu the resilience of Nigerians in the face of challenges, Afenifere reiterated earlier calls for greater attention to the current security crisis. The organization stressed that the government and security agencies are aware of the necessary measures that need to be taken. It expressed hope that the requisite determination and resources will be deployed to combat and even minimize insecurity.
In conclusion, Afenifere’s analysis of President Bola Tinubu’s speech highlighted positives while calling for concrete actions and increased focus on critical issues such as the economy, security and youth engagement. These expectations expressed by the organization illustrate the desire to see tangible and beneficial changes for the Nigerian society in the key areas identified by the President in his speech.
