64th Independence Day: President Tinubu presided over the ceremony at the Presidential Villa, Aso Rock, Abuja.
The event was held on Tuesday, with Tinubu arriving at the forecourt at around 10:10am as the special guest of honour for the ceremony, themed “Reflecting on the Past; Inspiring the Future”.
Upon arrival, the President received the national salute before inspecting the Guard of Honour, led by Lieutenant Colonel Moshood Yusuf and comprising members of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
This is Tinubu’s second Independence Day as President. Unlike previous years when the celebrations were held at Eagle Square, the current administration chose to hold the event inside the Villa. The change was first announced in October 2023 by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, who explained that the low observance was due to the country’s difficult economic situation.
Dignitaries present included Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, Chief Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, SGF Akume, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Service Chiefs, Inspector General of Police, cabinet ministers, former Presidents and Vice Presidents, heads of paramilitary organizations and members of the diplomatic corps.
The event, a symbol of the Nigerian nation, brought together the country’s key political and military stakeholders in a spirit of commemoration and reflection on the past to better envision the future. The presence of President Tinubu as the main figure underscored the significance of this historic day, highlighting the current issues facing the country and the challenges to be overcome in ensuring sustainable and prosperous development for all Nigerians.
Amidst economic and security challenges, the celebration also provided an opportunity for leaders to consider actions to ensure the stability and growth of the country, while strengthening national unity and cohesion. The message of reflection and inspiration conveyed during this symbolic event resonates as a call for unity and commitment by all to build a better future for Nigeria.
In conclusion, the 64th Independence Day will be remembered as a moment of commemoration, reflection and inspiration, marking a milestone in the history of Nigeria and paving the way for new challenges and opportunities for the country and its people.
