The Call for New Independence: Nigeria’s Historic October 1st Demonstration

Fatshimetrie: Call for a new independence against internal colonizers

On the eve of the October 1st national peaceful demonstration, one of the organizers and candidate for the 2023 presidential election of the Congress of African Action, Omoyele Sowore, said on Monday that the demonstration will go ahead as planned and is not aimed at attracting the attention of the ruling power for a dialogue with Aso Rock, but for their demands to be heard.

Speaking to Fatshimetrie, Sowore said the movement aims to defeat the tyranny of the democratic system.

“There will be a peaceful national demonstration on October 1st in Abuja, at the Eagle Square. This demonstration has always made a difference, it has always defeated tyranny and oppression. We did not plan this demonstration to get an invitation to the Aso Rock Villa.”

He also stressed that the protesters are not ready to accept anything other than the fulfillment of their demands. “No, we are only looking for one thing: change, not a monologue. The ultimatum attached to our demands is tomorrow, October 1, 2024.”

Explaining why the protest was scheduled for October 1, the day Nigeria celebrated its Independence from Britain in 1960, he said: “This is a significant protest that first questions the independence of 1960 and now seeks a new independence from internal colonizers.”

Concluding, he added that nothing will stop the protest, despite attempts at intimidation. “No matter what awaits us, we expect the worst but we know that the people will ultimately prevail.”

This determination expressed by the organizers and participants of the October 1 demonstration testifies to a desire for profound change in Nigeria, in search of true independence from the internal forces that hinder their freedom and prosperity. The call for a new independence against internal colonizers resonates as a legitimate demand for justice, equality and respect for the fundamental rights of every citizen. The date is set for October 1, symbolizing a new chapter in the history of Nigeria, where the voice of the people rises to demand their right to true freedom and a better future.
