Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Ati recently vehemently expressed Cairo’s condemnation of Israel’s aggression on Lebanon. According to him, this offensive represents a flagrant violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence.
During his speech at the general debate of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Abdel-Ati said that “Israel’s continued brutal aggression on the Gaza Strip for almost a year and the ongoing aggression in the West Bank constitute a real stain on the forehead of the international community and its institutions, which are incapable of exerting the minimum efforts necessary to stop this aggression.”
The minister added that Egypt strongly condemns “the dangerous escalation led by Israel, which knows no limits and is dragging the region to the brink of the abyss.”
Abdel-Ati stressed that the top priority is to immediately, permanently and unconditionally stop the bloodshed and to firmly oppose any attempt to liquidate the Palestinian cause through displacement or population replacement policies.
He also stressed the paramount importance of full and unconditional access to humanitarian and medical aid for the defenseless civilian population in the Gaza Strip.
Addressing Egypt’s mediation efforts with Qatar and the United States, Abdel-Ati mentioned that Israel has sought to obstruct these efforts for several months.
In addition, the Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs stressed that his country will continue to assume its responsibilities in the humanitarian response to the crises in its regional environment, making Egypt the third country in the world to receive asylum applications in 2023.
He also indicated that there are limits that must not be exceeded regarding the burdens that Egypt can bear, thus emphasizing the clear responsibility of the international community to provide comprehensive support to fill the funding gaps and mobilize the necessary resources to meet the needs of humanitarian operations and the requirements of refugees from countries experiencing conflict.
