Fatshimetrie, September 26, 2024 – A new era is dawning for university education in Kananga, in the province of Kasai Central, with a significant increase in the participation rate of young girls in higher education. According to the annual report of the University of Kananga (UNIKAN), the number of young women enrolled has seen a remarkable increase of 37% during the 2023-2024 academic year, compared to previous years. This increase reflects a positive trend in favor of women’s access to university education, highlighting their growing commitment to pursuing their studies.
A total of 2,501 students, including 1,768 boys and 733 girls, were welcomed at UNIKAN. Despite success rates considered average, with a rate of 62.7% for L2 old system promotions and 41.7% for the LMD system, the efforts made by the institution to support its students are commendable. The Academic Secretary General, Associate Professor Emmanuel Tshilembi Beya Bowa, emphasizes that courses have been taught continuously since the beginning of the academic year, even if challenges remain regarding the transition to the LMD system.
A major step forward was made with the authorization granted by the Ministry of Higher and University Education for the reopening of the Faculty of Medicine, thus allowing UNIKAN to operate as a relocated auditorium of the University of Lubumbashi. This decision opens up new opportunities for students and strengthens the diversity of training offered by the institution.
However, material challenges persist, including the lack of suitable buildings for university activities. The project to build modern buildings in Katambayi, funded by the Presidency of the Republic, promises to improve infrastructure and foster an environment conducive to learning. Prof. Tshilembi also advocated for the construction of a footbridge over the Lungandu River, which is necessary to facilitate student access to the Katambayi site.
Looking ahead, UNIKAN is considering opening a faculty of polytechnics to meet the growing needs of the population of Kasai Central for technical and scientific education. This new beginning symbolizes a strong commitment to high-quality education and pedagogical innovation, highlighting the importance given by the institution to diversifying its training offer.
In conclusion, UNIKAN is positioning itself as a key player in higher education in the region, offering learning and development opportunities for young Congolese. Its willingness to adapt to the needs of the labor market and to promote equal opportunities between men and women constitutes an inspiring example for the education sector in the DRC.. Through its innovative initiatives and commitment to academic excellence, UNIKAN embodies the hope of a promising future for Congolese youth.
