Fatshimetrie recently highlighted a worrying situation in the commune of Mulekera in Beni (North Kivu). Indeed, the civil society of this locality alerted the authorities about the discovery of an explosive device in the Saio district, and this, already a month ago.
Despite the alerts and the steps taken by local actors, no concrete action has been taken to neutralize this potential threat. The inhabitants, worried about the dangerousness of the device, deplore the lack of responsiveness of the competent authorities.
Joseph Sabuni, president of the local citizen structure, expresses his concern about the dramatic consequences that an explosion of this device could cause. He emphasizes that the simple warning posted on the site is not enough to guarantee the safety of residents and calls for urgent intervention to defuse the device and assess its exact nature.
In parallel, the MONUSCO Mine Action Service (UNMAS) has been informed of the situation and has marked the site pending intervention. However, the teams of experts are assessing the complexity of the device before taking any action.
This situation raises major concerns regarding the safety of the inhabitants of the Mulekera commune. It is imperative that local authorities and specialized agencies take rapid and effective measures to eliminate this potential threat and protect the population.
In a context already marked by insecurity, it is crucial that all stakeholders come together to guarantee the safety and well-being of the inhabitants of Mulekera and its surroundings. It is their responsibility to ensure that such situations do not remain unaddressed and that concrete measures are taken to prevent any serious incident.
