The recently revealed case implicating the Nigerian Correctional Service NCoS in allegations of corruption and bribery has rocked the Federal Government, which responded by ordering a thorough and unconditional investigation. The Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has spoken out to strongly condemn the alleged misconduct, stressing that any form of indiscipline, unprofessionalism and corruption will be dealt with with zero tolerance and serious consequences in the paramilitary services under the Ministry.
The revelations, initially aired during a Facebook live by social activist Martins Otse popularly known as VeryDarkMan, revealed an audio recording implicating notorious cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye (aka Bobrisky), discussing with another person how his godfather allegedly orchestrated his avoidance of detention, despite being sentenced to six months in prison for mutilating the national currency, the Naira. The audio clip also alleged that senior officials of Nigeria’s anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), demanded a bribe of N15 million to drop the money laundering charges against him.
In the face of these disturbing allegations, the Minister appointed a special investigation team led by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, to conduct a full and impartial investigation and submit a detailed report. Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo publicly assured that the investigation would be rigorous, transparent and impartial, and that appropriate disciplinary action would be taken against any personnel found guilty.
The Minister’s determination to fight corruption in government institutions is clearly evident. He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to upholding its core values of integrity, transparency and accountability, and ensuring that anyone found responsible for such wrongdoing is brought to justice.
In a context where public trust in government institutions is constantly being tested, it is imperative that firm measures are taken to ensure accountability and probity. The fight against corruption must not be limited to rhetoric, but must be translated into concrete actions such as this thorough investigation ordered by the government. Only such a resolute commitment to upholding the principles of ethics and good governance will restore the trust of the people and strengthen the integrity of state institutions.
