Exclusive report: Schoolchildren’s protest movement in Matadi

Fatshimétrie, the online reference newspaper, is proud to present an exclusive report on the schoolchildren’s protest movement in Matadi. This September, several hundred students from different schools in the city mobilized to demand the resumption of classes, marked by the teachers’ strike.

Faced with the prolonged absence of teachers in the classrooms, the schoolchildren decided to take action by organizing a sit-in in front of the Kongo Central governorate. Their message was clear: they aspire to continue their education and no longer want to be penalized by this conflict that deprives them of their right to learning.

Thus, student delegations were received by the provincial authorities, including Vice-Governor Prospère Ntela. The latter committed to putting in place temporary measures to compensate for the absence of teachers and ensure adequate supervision of students while waiting for a definitive resolution of the conflict.

On the teachers’ side, represented by the SYECO union, the position remains firm, demanding the satisfaction of their salary demands in order to consider a resumption of teaching activities. For George Dumbi, provincial secretary of the union, it is crucial that the government reacts and finds a rapid solution to this blockage which directly impacts the schooling of students.

This impasse has led to a delicate situation for the entire educational community, highlighting the essential issues of education and training of the younger generations. Indeed, each day of absence from school represents a loss of learning opportunities for students, thus compromising their future and personal development.

It is therefore imperative that the national and provincial authorities find a favorable outcome to this conflict, thus guaranteeing the continuity of classes and respect for the right to education for all children in the region. Education is an essential pillar of any society, and it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure its preservation and development.

Fatshimétrie will continue to closely monitor the evolution of this situation and to relay the actions undertaken to ensure a rapid return to normal in the schools of Matadi. Because education is the most precious heritage that can be passed on to the younger generations, and it cannot be compromised by the vagaries of a temporary crisis.

Everyone’s duty is to ensure that every child can access a quality education, guaranteeing their development and future success. We remain mobilized to provide reliable and committed information, in the service of education and the progress of all.
