The Sad Reality of Fatal Accident in Lagos: Call for Responsible Driving

The tragic accident that occurred in the early hours of Monday, September 23, 2024, in Lagos has left a deep impression. Two vehicles, each carrying four occupants, collided violently, causing the death of three young individuals at the scene of the crash. While the drivers escaped unhurt, the passengers suffered devastating consequences, plunging families and friends into deep distress.

Testimonies from those present at the scene of the accident paint a horrific picture. A social media user, Dr Love, relayed details of the incident, revealing that the 18-year-old driver caused the death of three of his friends. Investigation revealed that the young driver was not in possession of a driving license at the time of the incident.

Two victims lost their lives immediately, while a third died minutes after being pulled out of the crashed car, plunging the bereaved families into immeasurable grief.

Lagos State Police Spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin said the driver responsible for the accident will be questioned once he recovers from his injuries in hospital. He assured that the police would take statements from all those involved to understand the exact circumstances of the tragic accident.

Witnesses criticised the police response, saying that the officers prioritised arresting survivors rather than providing immediate assistance to the victims. However, Hundeyin defended the police action saying their primary concern was to provide medical attention to those in need.
