Fatshimetrie, October 18, 2024. The theater scene in Goma, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is taking on a new dimension with the official launch of classical theater activities. This event, held in the multipurpose hall of the Alliance Française, marked a significant step in the promotion of peace and equitable justice in the region.
Under the evocative theme “Equitable Justice for Sustainable Peace”, this initiative is part of a crucial historical context for the country. Baekam Kalauka, coordinator of the study office of the governor of the province of North Kivu, welcomed this approach aimed at strengthening social cohesion and harmony between populations. He stressed the importance of the role of artists in promoting justice and living together through quality shows.
Maxime Mwana Isse Ngeta, head of the provincial division of culture, arts and heritage of North Kivu, welcomed the choice of theatre as a means of promoting peace. As an instrument carrying educational messages and revealing social ills, theatre offers a platform conducive to raising awareness and changing mentalities. According to him, theatre for peace has the power to dispel hatred by conveying constructive messages focused on living together.
The play entitled “Voyage au bout de la misère ou les étoiles mourantes” brilliantly highlighted the injustices that plague society, while proposing possible solutions based on collective awareness. The hard-hitting slams and artistic performances gave a dynamic boost to this production, rekindling the flame of an era when theatre was a reflection of social concerns.
The North Kivu Provincial Division of Culture, Arts and Heritage is now considering extending these theatrical activities to secondary schools, universities and higher education institutions in the province. The aim is to raise awareness and engage the younger generation in promoting the values of justice, peace and tolerance.
In conclusion, classical theatre in Goma is proving to be a powerful lever for social transformation and the consolidation of the community fabric. By giving artists a voice and promoting creativity as a vector for change, this initiative opens up new perspectives for a future marked by justice, sustainable peace and solidarity.
