Taraba State: Local autonomy strengthened by the involvement of traditional leaders

**Taraba State Advisory Committee on Local Government Autonomy: Empowering Traditional Rulers for Sustainable Development**

In the context of local democracy and strengthening traditional institutions, Taraba State stands out by establishing a Local Government Autonomy Advisory Committee. The objective is clear: to ensure the financial autonomy of the 16 local governments while preserving the influence and crucial role of traditional leaders within their communities.

Under the leadership of Hon. Peter Diah, Chairman of the Committee and Chairman of the State Assembly Committee on Local Government, Tradition and Chieftaincy Affairs, Taraba State affirms its commitment to participatory and inclusive governance. At a recent consultative meeting with traditional leaders of the Central Region held in Gembu, Sardauna Local Government Area, assurances were given and prospects clarified.

Local government autonomy is seen as an opportunity to strengthen the linkages between public administration and traditional institutions. By allowing monarchs to actively participate in decision-making and local development, this new dynamic opens promising horizons for a fruitful partnership. “The autonomy of local governments will strengthen and enhance our traditional institutions, allowing you to play a more central role in the development and well-being of your people,” Diah stressed.

The vision of the Committee is built around close collaboration between local governments and traditional leaders to address community-specific challenges. A participatory and inclusive approach is advocated to ensure the sustainable and harmonious development of the regions of Taraba State.

Through a specific framework developed by the Committee, traditional institutions will be fully involved in the development of the grassroots. The Chief of Mambilla, Dr. Shehu Baju II, expressing the readiness of the monarchs to collaborate with this new structure, warmly thanked the Governor of Taraba State, Dr. Agbu Kefas, for the honour bestowed on them.

This development comes as a result of Governor Kefas inaugurating the Advisory Committee to Implement Local Government Autonomy in Taraba State, in line with the Supreme Court ruling. This visionary initiative paves the way for an innovative local governance model, rooted in citizen participation and respect for traditions. The future of Taraba State looks bright, driven by the strength of its cultural diversity and the willingness of its local stakeholders to work together for sustainable and inclusive development.
