As Sudan has been embroiled in a civil war for over 15 months, sparked by two generals, Hussein Awad Ali called for non-interference in the internal affairs of African countries.
Scrupulously respecting the UN Charter and its principles is crucial to ensuring the stability of the international order. It is imperative to avoid privileging certain principles at the expense of others, and not to reinterpret these rules according to particular interests. Hussein Awad Ali stressed the need for comprehensive reform of the international financial architecture to better address the challenges facing developing countries, such as poverty, conflict and climate change.
The call by the Sudanese Foreign Minister to respect the sovereignty of States and prevent interference in their internal affairs is all the more crucial in a context where international peace and security are threatened by violent conflicts and human rights violations. The Compact for the Future, adopted by world leaders, represents a major step towards a more secure, peaceful, sustainable and inclusive world for future generations.
The situation in Sudan, which is in the grip of a devastating civil war, is of great international concern. The recent large-scale attacks on the city of El Fasher, in Darfur, by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), have been strongly condemned by the UN Secretary-General. António Guterres called for an immediate end to these attacks and a cessation of hostilities to avoid an escalation of conflicts that could have devastating repercussions across the region.
It is imperative that all stakeholders commit to upholding the principles of the United Nations Charter and working together to find peaceful solutions to the ongoing conflicts. The international community must step up its efforts to ensure the protection of civilians and the delivery of life-saving humanitarian assistance to conflict-affected populations in Sudan. Only collective and coordinated action will end the violence and promote peace and stability in the region.
