Effective management of biomedical waste: the inauguration of the “waste zone” at the Sino-Congolese Friendship Hospital in Kinshasa

The inauguration of the “waste zone” at the Sino-Congolese Friendship Hospital in Kinshasa represents a major step forward in the management of biomedical waste in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This facility, comprising a double ash and placenta pit, a glass crusher, a semi-industrial Montfort incinerator, and other essential equipment, was funded by UNICEF with support from the World Bank.

In the midst of the Mpox epidemic crisis, the need to properly manage biomedical waste is imperative. The handover of this facility comes at a crucial time, when the needs for medical waste disposal are particularly pressing in Kinshasa. Indeed, the city is facing major public health challenges, and the proper management of biomedical waste is essential to prevent the spread of diseases and protect the population.

Local health authorities welcome this progress, stressing the importance of the incinerator in solving the urgent problem of biomedical waste management. Dr. Isabelle Lumbwe, Head of the Hygiene and Public Health Office at the Provincial Health Division of Kinshasa, emphasizes the urgency of this installation to guarantee the health safety of patients and medical staff.

Beyond the technical aspect, the establishment of the “waste zone” at the Sino-Congolese Friendship Hospital reflects a real and concrete need of this health structure. Dr. José Lipekene, Medical Director of the hospital, emphasizes the importance of having this infrastructure to meet the growing needs linked to the Mpox epidemic and the implementation of Universal Health Coverage.

This initiative is also welcomed by the partners involved in the project, such as UNICEF and the Water Supply Program for Villages. Their collaboration demonstrates the importance of international solidarity in combating health crises and promoting public health.

In conclusion, the inauguration of the “waste zone” at the Sino-Congolese Friendship Hospital is a significant step towards better management of biomedical waste in the DRC. This work demonstrates the commitment of the authorities and partners to guarantee the health and safety of the population, by responding effectively to the health and environmental challenges facing the country.
