A tragedy on the high seas: the macabre discovery of the pirogue “Saliou Mbacké” off the coast of Dakar, Senegal

Last Sunday off the coast of Dakar, Senegal, a macabre discovery was made, thus bringing back to the forefront the tragedies linked to illegal emigration in West Africa. A drifting pirogue, named “Saliou Mbacké”, was spotted by fishermen, revealing a vision of horror with corpses in an advanced state of decomposition on board.

The story of this boat seems to be closely linked to that of a hundred would-be illegal emigrants who had set sail from the city of Mbour, on August 13. Local authorities have also pointed out that the color and name of the pirogue correspond to those of the boat found on Sunday, thus raising deep concerns about the tragic fate of these travelers in search of a better life.

This new tragedy comes barely two weeks after the sinking of another pirogue off the coast of Mbour, which had claimed the lives of at least 39 people. These tragedies highlight the extreme risks faced by illegal migrants, who brave the ocean in often precarious and dangerous conditions in an attempt to reach Europe.

The Senegalese authorities, in collaboration with naval units, are mobilized to bring the pirogue and the bodies ashore in order to conduct the investigation and identify the victims. This new tragedy once again highlights the need for concerted action to combat illegal emigration and guarantee the safety of vulnerable populations who embark on such journeys at the risk of their lives.

At a time when migration challenges are at the heart of global concerns, it is crucial to put in place prevention policies and mechanisms to prevent such tragedies from happening again. The tragedy of the pirogue “Saliou Mbacké” is a poignant reminder of the dangers faced by migrants, while highlighting the urgent need for concerted action to protect their lives and fundamental rights.
