Improving local governance in the DRC: The territorial coaching project in Kimbanseke and Boma

Fatshimetrie, September 20, 2024 – Two municipalities in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kimbanseke in the East of Kinshasa and Boma in the South-East of Kongo-Central, are receiving funding over a five-year period as part of the territorial coaching project. This initiative, led by the governance sector, is a significant step towards improving local political management through the introduction of the territorial coaching method.

Rosette Kabona Balay, representative of the General Delegate of Wallonia-Brussels, stressed the importance of this pilot project focused on promoting good governance. According to her, this dynamic aims to encourage local authorities to adopt more transparent and effective practices in the management of public affairs.

Gilles Cressam, from the organization Échos Communication, specified that the territorial coaching project is structured around four major axes. First of all, it involves conducting advocacy and consultations with all stakeholders, including civil society, local authorities and government representatives, in order to ensure the success of decentralization. Then, a training and awareness-raising phase is planned to support local stakeholders in the application of this innovative method. Finally, the project aims to support the implementation of concrete projects that meet the needs of communities.

This ambitious program also provides for partnerships with municipalities in the Kingdom of Belgium and Morocco, as part of South-South cooperation aimed at strengthening the capacities of local stakeholders in Africa.

Ultimately, the territorial coaching project represents a unique opportunity for the municipalities of Kimbanseke and Boma to strengthen their governance capacities and promote sustainable local development. Thanks to this initiative, these two localities are set to become models for transparent and participatory political management, thus contributing to the emergence of exemplary local governance in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
