Challenges and opportunities for inclusion in elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo

The elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo represent a crucial moment for democracy and inclusion. Indeed, elections have always been an opportunity for citizens to make themselves heard and actively participate in the political life of their country. However, in recent years, challenges have been identified in terms of inclusion, highlighting the obstacles encountered by certain groups in society, such as indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, youth and women.

The December 2023 election was marked by these challenges, but also by opportunities in terms of inclusion. Experts stress the importance of ensuring the participation of all citizens, regardless of their profile, in the electoral process. It is with this in mind that a meeting to exchange experiences was organized in Kinshasa by the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), bringing together marginalized groups and the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI).

For the 2028 elections, it is crucial to find concrete solutions to ensure greater inclusiveness. This involves raising awareness among various political actors and civil society on the importance of guaranteeing the rights of all citizens to fully participate in the democratic process. The recommendations of experts and representatives of marginalized groups, such as Glory Mbangu and Yves Manza, are essential to identify the actions to be implemented.

Inclusion should not be an obstacle, but a force for democracy in the DRC. It is essential to work together to overcome the barriers that hinder the full participation of everyone in the political life of the country. The upcoming elections offer an opportunity to establish more inclusive practices and strengthen democratic values at the heart of Congolese society.

Thus, by mobilizing to promote inclusion and equal opportunities in the electoral process, the DRC will be able to affirm its commitment to a truly representative and inclusive democracy for all, where every voice counts and every citizen has their place.
