Reactivation of the Disarmament Programme in the DRC: Towards a lasting peace in the East of the country

Today, a crucial issue is looming on the horizon for the Democratic Republic of Congo: the reactivation of the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Program for combatants of armed groups. The announcement of this willingness by the UN mission is a key element for peace in eastern DRC. This major decision was reaffirmed during a recent meeting in Kinshasa between Jean-Pierre Lacroix, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, and Prime Minister Judith Suminwa.

This initiative aims to strengthen the working structures for the disengagement of combatants in South Kivu and the coordination of the disarmament of armed groups, with the aim of supporting diplomatic efforts to establish a lasting ceasefire in the DRC. Jean-Pierre Lacroix highlighted the possibility of close collaboration between the UN and the Congolese government to promote peace in the region. The protection of civilians remains an absolute priority for the United Nations, which is committed to supporting the security of populations and their property.

As part of the Suminwa Government Action Program (PAG 2024-2028), the protection of the national territory and the security of citizens occupy a central place. This program provides in particular for a redefinition and support of the new configuration of MONUSCO’s presence in the DRC. This is an essential step in consolidating peace and stability in this region ravaged by armed conflicts.

Cooperation between the UN and the Congolese government appears to be a crucial lever for progressing towards lasting peace in the DRC. The commitment of all parties concerned, the establishment of effective disarmament mechanisms and the protection of civilians are all essential elements for achieving a peaceful resolution of conflicts in the east of the country.

In conclusion, the reactivation of the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Program for Combatants of Armed Groups represents a glimmer of hope for the Congolese population in search of peace and security. This approach demonstrates the shared desire of the UN and the Congolese government to work together for a more peaceful and prosperous future for the DRC.
