Faced with the emergency, mobilization to protect women in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Faced with the alarming resurgence of violence against women in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the situation is becoming increasingly worrying. The figures are alarming, rapes and other forms of violence against women have increased, particularly in Makala prison, highlighting the urgency of taking tangible measures to stop this insidious scourge.

In this difficult context, the mobilization of the Synergy of Young Africans for the Consolidation of Peace and Security (SJACPS) appears as a ray of hope. During the parliamentary session in September 2024, the organization submitted crucial recommendations to Congolese parliamentarians. These proposals aim to strengthen the protection of women, fight against impunity and promote collective awareness on this crucial issue.

It is essential to raise awareness among the population about existing laws on the protection of women and to make them effective. The establishment of protection mechanisms adapted to victims, as well as the training of law enforcement and magistrates on the management of cases of gender-based violence, are essential and urgent measures.

Furthermore, it is imperative to break the silence surrounding this violence and to fight against the stigmatization of victims. Large-scale awareness campaigns are necessary to change mentalities and encourage women to denounce the violence of which they are victims.

The young activists of the SJACPS also insist on the need to grant equitable access to justice for women victims of violence, by setting up specialized courts and ensuring adequate financial support for programs to combat violence against women.

Ultimately, it is crucial that Congolese parliamentarians take concrete measures to put an end to this intolerable situation. It is their responsibility to act with determination and diligence to protect women and ensure their safety. The future of an entire society depends on the ability to guarantee the fundamental rights and dignity of everyone, especially women, who are too often the silent victims of these abominable acts.

It is time to act, to firmly condemn the perpetrators of these heinous acts and to build together a more just and equitable society, where everyone can live in safety and peace. The credibility and cohesion of an entire nation depends on it, which can no longer afford to turn a blind eye to this scourge that is undermining its foundations.

In this fight against violence against women, the unity, solidarity and determination of all are essential to achieve profound and lasting change. It is time to act, together, for a society that is more just, more egalitarian and more respectful of the rights of everyone.. Women deserve to be protected, respected and heard.
