Analysis of vegetable price trends in Kinshasa

Fatshimetrie, the leading news media, provides you with a detailed analysis of the recent evolution of vegetable prices on the markets of Kinshasa. A downward trend in prices has been observed for various market garden products, with significant drops for vegetables such as Bitekuteku amaranth and cabbage, thus offering new purchasing opportunities for consumers.

According to observations made in the field by our investigators, the price of an average 2kg bunch of Bitekuteku amaranth grown in N’sele has fallen by 23%, from 13,000FC to 10,000FC. This decrease is partly explained by the seasonality of harvests and the overabundance of certain vegetables on market stalls. Market gardener Ketura Marie Claire pointed out that this price drop was also linked to lower demand due to the back-to-school period, which focuses families’ attention on other priorities.

In addition to amaranth, other vegetables have also seen significant price drops. For example, a bunch of Mbanza-Ngungu cabbages is now offered at 3,000 FC, compared to 7,000 FC previously. Similarly, cassava leaves commonly known as Pondu Kongo have seen their price halved, from 3,000 FC to 1,500 FC. This downward trend is also found for products such as okra, yams, sweet potato leaves, sorrel, bean leaves and many others.

However, not all varieties of vegetables benefit from this price drop. Some, such as Misili ferns from N’sele Bambu or black tips from Banza-Ngungu, have seen their price increase due to specificities related to the production season. Despite these fluctuations, some commodities, such as Kikalakasa leaves and eggplant leaves, have maintained stable prices on the markets, thus offering a certain stability to consumers.

In short, the evolution of vegetable prices on the markets of Kinshasa reflects the dynamics specific to the agricultural sector and household consumption habits. This analysis highlights the importance of remaining attentive to price variations in order to be able to make judicious purchases and take full advantage of the diversity of products offered on the stalls of the markets of the Congolese capital.
