The eighth African Nations Championship will be held from February 1 to 28 in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe said on Monday.
The biennial African Nations Championship (CHAN) is reserved for locally based players, excluding football stars who play in Europe.
This is the first time East Africa has hosted a continental football competition for national teams, and will serve as a prelude to the three countries hosting the Africa Cup of Nations in 2027.
Patrice Motsepe visited three Kenyan national stadiums that are slated to host the event, two of which are currently undergoing renovation.
“The commitment of the three countries must be underlined, which will allow them to improve their football infrastructure and attract thousands of visitors, thus boosting tourism,” Motsepe said after chairing a meeting of the CAF executive committee.
Qualifying matches for the 19-team tournament will start on October 25 and end in December.
Senegal won the last edition of the tournament in 2023 by beating hosts Algeria 5-4 on penalties in the final.
Morocco and DR Congo have each won the CHAN title twice since its inception in 2009.
The tournament represents a unique opportunity for national teams to showcase the talent of local footballers and promote the development of continental football. Hosting the event in East Africa is a testament to the growth and diversity of African football. It will also allow the host countries to strengthen their connection with CAF and demonstrate their capacity to host top-level competitions.
In conclusion, the African Nations Championship contributes to the promotion of local football while providing a stimulating competition platform for the continent’s emerging talents. Its organization in East Africa marks an important turning point for the region and underlines CAF’s commitment to the development of African football.
