The resolute action of the provincial governor, Jean-Jacques Purusi, has been a determining factor in improving the situation. At the same time, concrete actions have been taken to punish individuals involved in fraud and illicit mining. More than 45 people have been arrested and imprisoned, highlighting the authorities’ determination to combat the disorder that reigns in the mining sector in South Kivu. Even magistrates, who are supposed to uphold the law, have been affected by these arrests, highlighting the importance of fighting corruption at all levels.
Beyond these repressive actions, it is essential to put in place strong and transparent governance mechanisms to ensure sustainable and ethical mining. It is crucial to involve local stakeholders, communities and civil society organizations in this process, to ensure that the benefits of mining actually benefit the local population and contribute to the economic and social development of the region.
