Land grabbing in N’sele: MPs call on the government to protect market gardeners

Fatshimétrie, September 15, 2024 – The issue of the dispossession of a market garden site in N’sele, a commune in eastern Kinshasa, by unidentified individuals, has raised serious concern among some representatives of the Congolese people. Indeed, two national deputies, Marie Kyet Mutinga and Gaborian Kumeza Mboma, requested an audience with the Minister of State for Land Affairs to find a rapid solution to this problem which directly impacts market gardeners and the Congolese population.

In their correspondence addressed to the minister, the deputies highlighted the urgency of the situation, stressing that the dispossessed market gardeners can no longer carry out their agricultural activities in complete peace. This dispossession not only hinders their livelihood but also contributes to the scarcity of vegetables on the markets of the city-province of Kinshasa.

After a raid on the DAIPIN market gardening site, the national elected representatives noted with bitterness that the land areas formerly exploited by the market gardeners are now occupied by unauthorized individuals. This unacceptable situation prompted the deputies to act and directly question the Minister of State to find a rapid and effective solution.

This approach by the deputies is part of their responsibilities as representatives of the Congolese people. They defend the interests of the market gardeners who depend on this agricultural activity for their livelihood. By calling for immediate action, the deputies highlight the importance of protecting the rights of farmers and ensuring an adequate supply of agricultural products for the Congolese population.

It is essential that the government take concrete measures to resolve this problem of land dispossession and to guarantee the safety of market gardeners in carrying out their activity. The protection of farmers’ land rights is a crucial issue for ensuring food security and the well-being of the Congolese population. It is therefore imperative that concrete actions be taken quickly to put an end to this situation that is detrimental to all.

In conclusion, the dispossession of a market garden site in N’sele is a problem that requires an immediate and effective response from the competent authorities. National deputies have played a crucial role in drawing attention to this issue and calling for urgent measures to resolve this problem. It is now time for the government to take concrete measures to protect the rights of market gardeners and ensure food security for the Congolese population.
