Groundbreaking forum in Addis Ababa for child protection in Africa

Fatshimetrie, 14 September 2024 (ACP).- An event of crucial importance for the future of African children was announced today. From 28 October to 2 November 2024, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, will host an exceptional forum organized by the African Movement of Working Children and Youth. The theme chosen for this major meeting is “resilience of children’s groups and young people in a context of multi-crisis”.

Lucien Ngaboyeka Kavunja, National Coordinator of the AMWCY in the Democratic Republic of Congo, shared his enthusiasm for this major event. He stressed the importance of this initiative which will mark the 30 years of existence of the AMWCY and will provide a platform for participants to reflect, share their experiences and propose innovative solutions for the promotion of children’s rights in Africa.

A key dimension of this forum will be to highlight the challenges faced by children in Africa, particularly those recruited into armed groups. The DRC will have the opportunity to share its expertise in identifying recruited children, reintegrating them into society and supporting them towards positive future prospects.

Lucien Ngaboyeka Kavunja highlighted the commitment of the AMWCY to protecting vulnerable children and the importance of psychotechnical clinics to help these young people overcome the trauma related to their war experience. He highlighted the crucial role of awareness-raising and career guidance in offering these children a new perspective on life.

Ultimately, this African children’s forum in Addis Ababa promises to be an essential event to address the major issues related to child protection in Africa, and to propose concrete solutions adapted to the reality of young people on the continent.
