Coming revolution in Congolese football: The Super League is on the horizon

The Congolese Football Association Federation recently unveiled its ambitious plans for the future of national football. Indeed, in a communication addressed to the clubs involved in Linafoot Ligue 1 and 2 for the 2024-25 season, the governing body of Congolese football unveiled its program to rebuild the national championship.

One of the significant decisions taken by the Federation concerns the current season, where no relegation will be applied, but where the promotion of 6 clubs is envisaged. This measure is part of a longer-term vision, with the objective of reorganizing the championship to make it more competitive and attractive.

With a total of 26 clubs involved, the Federation plans to implement a new national championship format, including fewer teams. From the 2025-26 season, the Super League will be created, bringing together the 14 best teams from the two groups of Ligue 1. The other clubs will play in a reformed Ligue 1, with a reduced number of participants, while the current Ligue 2 will be studied with a view to potential reforms.

This reorganization of the Congolese championship marks a return to a more traditional format, with a championship in a single phase, without the usual play-offs. A decision that is reminiscent of the period between 2012 and 2017, when the championship was played in a single pool of 14 clubs. This new orientation aims to guarantee a more intense competition and to promote the level of the teams involved.

This change in format could also have an impact on Congolese football as a whole, by offering clubs the opportunity to develop and compete at a higher level. The Super League thus promises to offer supporters quality matches and a sporting spectacle on par with the biggest international leagues.

In short, the vision of the Congolese Football Association Federation for the future of national football is ambitious and full of hope. By reorganizing the championship according to a new format, it paves the way for a more competitive competition and growth opportunities for all players in Congolese football. The Super League promises to be a major turning point for football in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and is already generating enthusiasm among football fans across the country.
